Chapter Eight

“You beat my brother! I’ve never seen such strength!” Minna Heartstone exclaimed as Donal collected a wooden trough brimming with roasted boar, bread, cheese, and fruit pasties. He hadn’t had a pasty since last fall. These smelled like mincemeat, and his mouth watered as he put three in his trough.

Minna chattered away about his brawn, but he ignored her as he searched for Sapphire to share his trough.

“She’s sharing with Erik. You’re looking for Sapphire, are you not?” Minna said happily, pointing across the way to a set of wooden benches and carved table dressed with bowls of small apples and candelabras studded with half-melted candles.

That statement caught his attention. His ire simmered beneath the surface—a good companion to his caged beast. He followed the line of her finger and saw Sapphire’s dark face and hair with her stunning eyes trained on Erik. Was that adoration or merely hunger?

“Aye,” he gritted out. What was this game she played? He thought her different than other females, but she was proving herself to be the same.

“I’ve no one to share with,” she said, watching him expectantly.

Feeling somehow obliged, he offered to dine with her. “I have enough for two, but only if you eat like a bird. You don’t get this big by not eating.”

Minna giggled and crooked a finger at him. “A man with a big appetite must be satisfied. Come. Sit at my brother’s table.”

He eyed the willowy blonde with suspicion but followed and saw Sapphire practically purring like a cat. Erik sliced small portions of pork and fed them Sapphire. She caught his eye as she flicked her tongue out and caught the juicy meat—so close to licking Erik that Donal was momentarily blinded by a surge of violent red. It took Minna coaxing him to sit on a bench facing the lovebirds before he trusted himself to pick up a knife. He didn’t question his reaction—in his mind, he’d begun marking Sapphire when he stole her kiss. She didn’t know and couldn’t be blamed.

If this was what she wanted, he could play her game.

“I’m unfamiliar with your customs,” he murmured. “Do you dine from my fork or my fingers.”

Minna slanted her eyelashes provocatively. He felt nothing for the girl, but he could feel Sapphire’s eyes stabbing him in the temple and neck as he looked at Minna with a slice of pork.

“I dislike the bitterness of metal when fingers will do most fine,” she said before catching the piece with her teeth.

He drew his finger across her bottom lip, catching a quick glance at Sapphire as he did. Her face went still, and she returned attention to Erik, looking far too interested in him to be authentic. He watched her lick her lips—as dark as ripe plums—and a craving to taste and nibble her forbidden fruit assailed him with such force it nearly stole his breath.

Minna was but a pale shadow in comparison—unfair to the girl, for she seemed sweet enough, just not intriguing to him. He liked Sapphire’s fiery spirit—everything else was gravy.
